Careers / Hiring Process

Welcome to the employment site for ZC Sterling. If you are thinking about applying, this page will answer many of your questions about the process. Although there are always situations and circumstances which alter the process, this is our general practice.
  • Application

You may submit a resume to ZC Sterling for a specific job. Here at ZC Sterling we use an Applicant Tracking System called OpenHire. All of the data is real time; meaning once you submit your information it is received by us right away. An online submission of your resume will be acknowledged via email. Resumes submitted by other means, whether it is a job board or ZC Sterling website, are all tracked in one place. We still accept paper resumes, but we strongly encourage you to apply electronically. It is the fastest way to be considered for a position. Your profile and resume will remain active in our system for one year—which is regularly searched by ZC Sterling recruiters—so you may be considered for future openings that match your qualifications.
  • Timeline

From application to hiring decision, our employment process can take from three weeks to three months. Because the timing can be unpredictable, you should let your ZC Sterling recruiter know about any factors affecting your availability. Candidates who get to the interview stage will be notified if the position is filled by another applicant.
  • Preliminary screening

A ZC Sterling recruiter reviews the qualifications of all candidates seeking consideration for a position. The recruiter will either forward resumes to the hiring manager for review or will call to do an initial phone screen. If your resume is sent to the hiring manager first, the hiring manager will select the candidates to be interviewed.
  • Phone screening

To help align your interests with our opportunities, a ZC Sterling recruiter will call you to ask for additional information, such as depth of technical/professional knowledge, availability for interviews, interest in relocation, salary expectations, etc.
  • Scheduling an interview

When a hiring manager asks to meet you, a ZC Sterling recruiter or Human Resources coordinator will call to arrange a time for you to come in for an interview. Prior to coming in for a face to face interview you will be sent an application via email. Within this email there is a link that you click on that will open the actual application. Some times candidates confuse applying for a position and filling out an application. They are two separate processes.
  • Interviews

When you arrive for your interview, a Human Resources representative will greet you, discuss your application, explain the schedule for your visit, and answer any questions. You will also be given a disclosure and release statement to fill out so in case we move forward in the process, we can conduct a background check. You are also given a copy of your rights under the Fair Credit Reporting Act. During the interview you will have the chance to share your detailed qualifications and learn more about ZC Sterling and our culture. Sometimes we need to ask a candidate back for additional interviews before making a final decision.
  • Assessments

ZC Sterling currently gives a basic aptitude assessment that is called the SRA. This is given to all candidates being considered for an opening. Depending on the position that you are applying to you may be given additional assessments that measure specific skills necessary for you to be successful in your position.
  • Offer

If you're selected for the position, a Human Resources representative will convey a formal offer. The offer package will include starting salary and a summary of benefits, etc. Normally we would expect your decision within a week.
  • Background Checks & Drug Screens

If we're considering you for a job offer, we will conduct a background check that covers your employment history, references, educational qualifications, etc. (When you came in for your face to face interview, we asked you to sign a form authorizing this check.) An offer may be made prior to receiving the results, which is contingent on there being no adverse information reported. A conviction or adverse information does not bar you from employment. ZC Sterling also conducts pre employment drug screens. All drug screens – which typically take 48 hours for the results, must be received by ZC Sterling prior to your start date. All drug screens must be completed within 72 hours after the offer is made or the offer will be rescinded.
  • Hire and orientation

After you accept the offer, we will discuss and determine your start date. New employees generally start on Mondays. We hold orientation sessions every Monday except in late December and on federal holidays observed by ZC Sterling.
